The term “As good as gold” probably described Peoria High School as well as any term in the 1990s. The school seemed to be excelling in academics, the arts, athletics, vocational programs, and everyone seemed to be involved. In the academic areas, students were getting scholarships to top schools such as Stanford, M.I.T., Cal Tech, Northwestern, and Cornell. We also had more honors and gifted classes than ever. With the addition of block scheduling our arts program blossomed with more and bigger classes. Athletically we continued to win in football, girls’ basketball, and wrestling won the State Championship for three consecutive years. Vocationally the school continued its outstanding Agriculture program, but we began to add more work programs and internships, so students could have time to explore careers and get paid for the experience. Everything was clicking at PHS and everyone was involved in some way in the school. We were all in on being Panthers!
